Stairs are the most detailed part of most flooring jobs. Each tread and riser has to be cut, fitted and finished by hand, and the edge of every step takes more wear than almost any other part of the floor. Our project gallery includes internal stairs with timber-look treads and contrasting nosings. Here is how stair flooring works.

Vinyl on stairs

When a home or building moves to vinyl plank downstairs, owners often want the stairs to match. Vinyl can be installed on treads and risers, with a stair nosing fitted to the front edge of each tread. The nosing protects the edge, gives a clean finish and, on many products, adds a contrasting or textured strip that makes the step edge easier to see.

Not every vinyl plank system is designed for stairs. Some products have matching stair nosings, while others need a compatible trim. We confirm the right approach for the product you choose.

Carpet on stairs

Carpet remains popular on stairs because it is softer, quieter and adds grip. Stair carpet is usually installed with underlay and fixed at each tread, either waterfall style or tucked tight under the nosing. Every stair is measured individually, because small differences add up over a flight.

Why nosings matter

The front edge of a stair is where people step, slip and wear the surface. A good nosing:

  • Protects the edge of the tread from damage
  • Gives a durable surface where wear is greatest
  • Can make the step edge more visible
  • Helps the finish look sharp and consistent

In commercial buildings, stair nosings may need to meet specific requirements set by the designer or building surveyor. We supply products to suit the specification provided.

Commercial stairs

Office, school and public building stairs carry heavy traffic and must be safe. Commercial stair treads and nosings are designed for this. We install to the project specification and coordinate with the builder on timing, as stairs are often a key access route during construction.

Preparation

Stairs need sound, solid treads. Squeaky or loose treads should be fixed before the new finish goes on. Old carpet grippers, staples and adhesive have to be removed. Concrete stairs may need patching where edges are chipped. We assess this at the measure and quote it separately.

How long stairs take

A straight flight takes time, and a winder or curved stair takes longer. We include a realistic time allowance in the quote, separate from the flat floor areas.

Safety and consistency on stairs

Stairs are where flooring choices meet safety most directly. A good stair finish gives reliable grip, clearly visible edges and consistent risers and treads so people don't misjudge a step. Nosings do much of this work on vinyl stairs. They protect the tread edge, provide a grippy profile and make the edge easier to see, especially in a contrasting colour.

Consistency with the floors above and below matters for appearance. Many homeowners want the stair to match the hallway vinyl plank. Others prefer carpet for comfort and quiet, especially in double-storey homes where the stairs lead to bedrooms. Both work. The key is planning the transitions at the top and bottom landings so the finish looks intentional.

On commercial stairs, specifications often require particular nosing types and contrast for visibility. Send us the requirement and we'll quote to it. For homes, we measure each stair individually, because older stairs especially can vary slightly from step to step. Our vinyl plank and carpet pages cover the products.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can vinyl plank go on any stairs?

Most standard timber or concrete stairs can take vinyl with suitable nosings. Open or curved stairs need more detailed work, and we check them on site.

Why are stairs priced separately?

Each stair is measured, cut and finished individually, which takes more time than open floor areas.

What are visual-contrast nosings?

Nosings with a contrasting colour strip that makes stair edges easier to see. They're common on commercial stairs where the specification requires them.
