Even in homes with hard floors throughout the living areas, many people still want carpet in the bedrooms. It is warmer, quieter and softer underfoot. Broadloom carpet, the continuous roll carpet fitted wall to wall, is still the usual choice. Here is what to think about when choosing it.

Broadloom versus carpet tiles

Broadloom is installed in large pieces with few or no seams, giving a soft, continuous finish. Carpet tiles are modular and better suited to offices and heavy-use spaces where individual tiles may need replacing. For bedrooms, broadloom is usually the better fit.

Fibre

Carpet fibres differ in feel, durability, stain resistance and cost. Wool is known for its natural feel and resilience. Synthetic fibres such as nylon and polyester are widely used and offer good stain resistance and value. Blends combine properties of both. We bring samples and discuss which suits your household.

Pile

The pile is the surface texture. Cut pile is soft and plush. Loop pile is more textured and can be very hard-wearing, though pets’ claws can catch in some loop styles. Cut-and-loop combines both for pattern and texture. For bedrooms, softer cut piles are popular.

Underlay

The underlay matters as much as the carpet. A good underlay improves comfort, insulation and acoustics, and helps the carpet last. We quote underlay as a separate item so you know what you are getting.

Colour

Light carpets look fresh but show stains. Mid tones and flecked colours hide everyday marks better. In a rental or a busy family home, a forgiving colour is practical. Bring paint or furniture samples to the measure if you want to compare.

Transitions to hard floors

When carpet meets vinyl plank at a bedroom door, the junction needs a suitable trim. Planning floor heights at the start avoids a raised edge or a gap. We look at each doorway during the measure.

Stairs and hallways

If the stairs and upstairs hallway are carpeted too, it is usually best to choose the same carpet throughout for a continuous look. See our guide to stair flooring.

Installation day

On the day, old carpet and underlay are removed if scoped, grippers fitted, underlay laid, and the carpet stretched and trimmed. Doors may need trimming if the new floor is higher. We will tell you in advance if furniture needs to be moved.

Getting the most comfort from bedroom carpet

Comfort comes from the combination of carpet and underlay, not either one alone. A dense, well-made underlay supports the carpet pile, helps it recover from footprints and furniture, and adds warmth and quiet. A thin or worn underlay makes even a good carpet feel flat. When replacing bedroom carpet, it's usually worth replacing the underlay too.

Think about how the room is used. Children's rooms get toys, spills and more traffic. A durable, stain-resistant fibre in a mid-tone suits them. Main bedrooms are often chosen for softness and feel. Guest rooms can use a more economical option. In upstairs bedrooms, carpet also reduces noise to the rooms below, which is a real benefit in double-storey homes common in estates like Craigieburn and Mickleham.

Finally, plan the junction with hallway hard floors. A neat carpet-to-vinyl trim at each doorway gives a finished look, and planning heights at the measure avoids a step.
