School floors take a particular kind of punishment: hundreds of students a day, chairs dragged constantly, food, art supplies, wet shoes and very limited windows for maintenance. Business managers and facilities teams need floors that last, are easy to clean, and can be installed without disrupting teaching. Here is how we approach the main spaces.

Classrooms

Many classrooms suit carpet tiles. They help with acoustics, which matters in a room of 25 voices, and they are comfortable for floor-based activities in junior years. The biggest advantage is that a stained or damaged tile can be replaced on its own instead of re-carpeting the room. Keeping a stock of spare tiles from the same batch makes that easy.

Some schools prefer hard floors in classrooms for easier cleaning, especially in junior school or science-adjacent rooms. Commercial vinyl planks or sheet vinyl give a durable, cleanable surface. Mixing the two is common: carpet tiles in the teaching zone and vinyl in the wet or messy zone near sinks.

Corridors and entries

Corridors and entries see the heaviest wear. Durable commercial vinyl or sheet vinyl is usual, sometimes with entry matting systems at external doors to trap grit before it reaches the main floor.

Art, science and food technology rooms

These rooms need hygienic, chemical-tolerant surfaces. Welded sheet vinyl with coved edges where needed is a common choice. Food technology rooms may require slip-resistant products in some zones. We work from your specification and the products’ documented ratings.

Toilets and amenities

Student toilets and change rooms generally use welded sheet or safety vinyl with cove skirting for hygiene and easier cleaning.

Staff rooms and offices

Staff rooms often have a kitchenette zone in vinyl and a lounge or work area in carpet tiles. Offices suit carpet tiles for acoustics.

Timing around the school calendar

The biggest planning constraint is time. Most schools want flooring done in the summer break or shorter term holidays, which compresses many projects into the same few weeks. If you are planning a holiday install, talk to us early. That gives time to measure, order materials and schedule preparation such as uplift, grinding or levelling. Where work has to happen during term, we can stage rooms after hours or on weekends, in agreement with the school.

Working with Child Safe requirements

Schools have their own requirements for contractors on site. Tell us what you need, such as Working with Children Checks, sign-in processes and supervision rules, and we will plan the crew and timing to suit.

Preparation in older buildings

Older school buildings can have several layers of old flooring and patched slabs. We assess the substrate at the measure and quote floor preparation as separate items.

Making holiday programs work

School holidays are short, and a lot of trades compete for them. To make a flooring program work, lock in dates early, often a term ahead, and confirm what else is happening on site at the same time, such as painting, electrical, furniture deliveries or cleaning. Flooring usually needs other messy work done first, and furniture needs to be out of rooms before the crew arrives.

Plan room by room. Classrooms with heavy furniture need moving plans, and specialist rooms like science labs may have fixed benches the floor is cut around. Toilets and wet areas with sheet vinyl and coving take longer than open rooms, so start them early in the window. Leave time at the end for protection, cleaning and furniture return before staff come back.

Finally, confirm site requirements upfront: sign-in, Working with Children Checks, and any areas that remain in use during holidays, such as offices or holiday programs.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can school floors be replaced during term?

Sometimes, in isolated areas or after hours. Most larger works are planned for school holidays to avoid disruption.

Which is better for classrooms, carpet tiles or vinyl?

It depends on how the room is used. Carpet tiles help with acoustics and comfort. Vinyl is easier to clean where spills and messy activities happen.

Do your installers have Working with Children Checks?

Ask us when you request a quote and tell us the school's requirements. We'll confirm what's needed for the crew attending.
