In most rooms, the floor stops at the wall and a skirting board covers the joint. In a clinic, a childcare bathroom or a commercial kitchen, that joint is a problem. It is a place for water, dirt and bacteria to collect, and it is hard to clean properly. Vinyl cove skirting solves this by carrying the floor up the wall in one continuous piece.

What cove skirting is

With cove skirting, the sheet vinyl is turned up the wall to a set height, often 100 to 150 millimetres depending on the specification. A cove former, a small curved fillet, sits in the corner between floor and wall so the vinyl follows a smooth radius instead of a sharp 90-degree angle. The top edge finishes with a capping strip, and internal and external corners are cut, formed and heat welded.

The result is a curved junction that a mop can clean in one pass, with no gap behind.

Where cove skirting is used

  • Healthcare and allied health rooms where infection control matters
  • Aged care bathrooms, ensuites and dirty utility rooms
  • Childcare bathrooms, nappy change areas and kitchens
  • Commercial kitchens, cool rooms and food preparation zones
  • Laboratories, vet clinics and grooming areas
  • Workplace amenities and change rooms

Some residential clients also choose coved sheet vinyl for laundries and bathrooms that get heavy use.

Why it takes longer than a standard skirting

Coving is skilled, slow work. Every corner is shaped by hand. Around door frames, pipes, cabinet plinths and floor wastes, the installer has to cut and form the vinyl so it sits tight with no gaps. It is one of the details that separates a commercial sheet installation from a basic one. We quote cove skirting by the lineal metre and corner count, separate from the floor area, so it is visible on the quote.

Wall and substrate preparation

The wall behind the cove needs to be sound, flat and suitable for adhesive. Fresh plasterboard, cement sheet and rendered masonry all behave differently. The floor needs the same attention as any sheet vinyl job: level, dry and clean. If the room has falls to a floor waste, those falls are formed in the substrate before the vinyl goes down. We assess walls and floors at the measure and list any preparation as its own line.

Coving and safety vinyl

Safety vinyl can also be coved, and often is in wet areas. Because safety vinyl is thicker and textured, forming corners takes extra care. Some ranges have matching smooth products for the cove section. We follow the manufacturer’s system for the product chosen.

What to tell us

  • Which rooms need coving and to what height
  • Whether there is a specification, such as a health or food-safety requirement
  • Wall linings in each room
  • Any fixtures that will be installed after the floor, such as vanities or benches
  • Access hours for occupied sites

Avoiding common problems

Coving is often value-engineered out of a project to save cost, then added back later when the client realises they cannot clean the room properly. Retrofitting is harder and more disruptive than doing it during the original install. Plan it at the start where possible. Also coordinate with other trades: if cabinets are installed after the floor, the cove line has to be planned around their final positions.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can cove skirting be added to an existing floor?

Usually the cove is formed from the same sheet as the floor, so it's done when the floor is installed. Retrofitting depends on the existing floor and is assessed case by case.

Is cove skirting only for commercial jobs?

Mostly, but it can suit home laundries or accessible bathrooms where easy cleaning matters.

What height should cove skirting be?

It's set by the specification or the project's needs. Tell us the height required and we'll quote to it.
